Apply for the Academy


The 2019 PLI BMOC Academy will kick-off in April 2019 and complete in October 2019. Throughout the seven-month cohort period, participants will engage in continuous learning through  face-to-face engagements.

Admissions Criteria

 All practitioners that apply to the Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • Be Baltimore city based, engaged in providing direct services. program management, administrative oversight, policy advocacy, and/or fund development within the focus of serving Boys and Men of Color.
  • Be a program leader of at least 18 years of age.
  • Served Boys and Men of Color in Baltimore for at least 3 years..

Successful candidates for the 2019 PLI BMOC Academy also demonstrate the following traits:

  • Commitment to the field, with at least three years of experience;
  • Capacity to make data driven decisions including data collection and analysis; and
  • Attend all cohort sessions.


Tuition costs are fully subsidized thanks to generous support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The tuition costs include face-to-face learning engagements, online learning sessions, instructional technology and reading materials. Upon completion of the program portfolio, each fellow will receive a $500 stipend at the end of graduation.


The PLI Academy made me feel more confident as a leader in the field and in my agency, as I transitioned into the role of Program Director. The opportunity to learn and apply strategies, and to work with other fellows, helped strengthen my ability to network and go after new resources.

How to Apply

STEP 1: Review Academy Application Guide

The 2018 PLI BMOC Academy Application Information Packet provides guidance for completeing the application and details the requirements of the applicant during the application process.

STEP 2: Fill Out Online Application

Be prepared to submit the following:

  • Up-to-date professional resume;
  • Biography;
  • Professional headshot (optional); and
  • Short answer and essay responses.

STEP 3: In addition to completing the application, all candidates must submit at least one, and up to two, Reference Forms:

Reference Form/Letter of Recommendation:

A letter of recommendation must be completed by the candidate's direct supervisor or a higher-ranking, full-time paid staff member or mentor.



Optional Reference Form/Letter of Recommendation:

Candidates can choose to submit an additional recommendation from another professional in the field, who knows the candidate in a professional capacity and would like to show their support for the candidate to be admitted to the 2018 PLI BMOC Academy This could be; a colleague, a professional mentor, or any other individual whom the applicant knows in a professional capacity.
