The 2017 PLI Academy (Cohort 5) will kick-off in March 2017 and complete in October 2017. Throughout the eight-month cohort period, participants will engage in continuous learning through both face-to-face engagements and web-based workshops. 

The five learning topics for the 2017 PLI Academy syllabus are listed below.

  • Return on Investment - Telling Your Story and Providing Your Value;
  • Strategic Planning and Organizational Development for Human Services Professionals;
  • Developing and Implementing a Policy Advocacy Strategy;
  • Resilient Leadership; and
  • Professional Networking.

Admissions Criteria

 All practitioners that apply to the Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a senior-level practitioner, engaged in providing direct services, program management, administrative oversight, policy advocacy, and/or fund development within at least one of the following focus fields:
    • Responsible Fatherhood
    • Family Strengthening
    • Workforce Development
    • Boys and Men of Color
  • Be connected to one of these focus fields for at least a five-year period.

Successful candidates for the 2017 PLI Academy also demonstrate the following traits:

  • Commitment to the field, with at least five years of experience;
  • Proven success in a higher education setting; and
  • Capacity to make data driven decisions including data collection and analysis.

Tuition costs are fully subsidized thanks to generous support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Family Assistance. The tuition costs include face-to-face learning engagements, online learning sessions, instructional technology and reading materials. Lodging costs and most travel costs for face-to face-engagements are also included in the subsidized tuition costs.

The fellow or supporting organization will be responsible for travel related expenses including ground transportation, meals, incidentals, and airport parking. 



The PLI Academy made me feel more confident as a leader in the field and in my agency, as I transitioned into the role of Program Director. The opportunity to learn and apply strategies, and to work with other fellows, helped strengthen my ability to network and go after new resources.

How to Apply

STEP 1: Review Academy Application Packet

The 2017 PLI Academy Application Information Packet provides guidance for completeing the 2017 PLI Academy Application and delineates the requirements of the applicant during the application process.

STEP 2: Fill Out Online Application

Be prepared to submit the following:

  • Up-to-date professional resume;
  • Professional biography;
  • Professional headshot;
  • Work Sample (optional); and
  • Short answer and essay responses.

STEP 3: In addition to completing the application, all candidates must submit at least one, and up to two, Reference Forms:

Required Organizational Support Reference Form/Letter of Recommendation:

A letter of recommendation and signed support statement must be completed by the candidate's direct supervisor or a higher-ranking, full-time paid staff member. If the candidate is the organizations highest ranking staff member, then this recommendation must be completed by the organization's Board President/Chair.

If a registered 501C3, the supporting organization will be asked to submit an IRS Form 990 as an attachment to the Organizational Support Form. 


Optional Reference Form/Letter of Recommendation:

Candidates can choose to submit an additional recommendation from another professional int he field, who knows the candidate in a professional capacity and would like to show their support for the candidate to be admitted to the 2017 PLI Academy (Cohort 5). This professional could be; a colleague, a professional mentor, a current or graduate PLI Academy Fellow (from Cohorts 1, 2, 3 or 4) familiar with the candidate, or any other individual whom the applicant knows in a professional capacity.
